Gladys Horton, lead singer of the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Marvelettes[/lastfm]‘ classics “Please Mister Postman,” “Playboy” and “Beachwood 4-5789,” died Wednesday at a Southern California nursing home. She was 66 and had been in poor health since a stroke. Motown’s first important girl group, The Marvelettes were singed by Berry Gordy after winning a high school talent show in the Detroit suburb of Inkster. But by the mid-’60s, their labelmates The Supremes passed them in popularity and the group broke up by the end of the decade.
Horton published her autobiography, Original Marvelettes, Motown’s Mystery Girl Group, in 2004.
