[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Beach Boys[/lastfm] are finally going to release the album Smile this summer in celebration of their 50th anniversary! The news came during an Examiner interview with Beach Boys guitarist [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Al Jardine[/lastfm].

Smile was recorded over 17 sessions in 1966 and 1967 and was supposed to be the follow-up to Pet Sounds. As the story goes, a combination of strained relationships, contract issues, the draft, drugs, paranoia and musical differences prevented the release. For a run down on the Smile saga, check out this Examiner article.

The tracks of Smile are still, to this day, shrouded in mystery. Some of the tracks resurfaced on later albums, some reassembled ‘albums’ were passed around as bootlegs, and in 2004 [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Brian Wilson[/lastfm] and his songwriting partner [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Van Dyke Parks[/lastfm] recorded their own version of the ‘lost’ album under the title Brian Wilson Presents Smile. (Wilson’s version won critical raves and earned a Metascore of 97, one of the highest ever on Metacritic.) Still fans will be eager to get their hands on a copy featuring the original sessions. I know it’ll be on my record shelf! Can you say pre-order!

In a recent interview with The Examiner [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Al Jardine[/lastfm] admitted Smile was being issued with the original versions (“we didn’t do any new recordings”).

“Capitol Records plans to issue a Beach Boys version of Smile sometime this summer to begin the celebration of The Beach Boys’ anniversary. Smile is the Holy Grail for Beach Boys’ fans, so it will be good.

I don’t have many details on it, although we didn’t do any new recording. I’m happy to see it finally come out.  Brian’s changed his mind about releasing the material, but it was inevitable, wasn’t it? (Al chuckles).”

Pet Sounds continues to have a huge musical influence on contemporary bands, and The Beach Boys have gone on to be honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and, in 2001, with a GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award. the release of this album is sure to be a very big deal!
