Named after the Michigan train line known as the Grand Trunk Western Railroad, the trio that was [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Grand Funk[/lastfm] came to prominence when they appeared at the Atlanta Pop Festival in 1969.

#3. “Bad Time” (from All the Girls in the World Beware!!!):

Along with their cover of the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Soul Brothers Six[/lastfm]‘s “Some Kind of Wonderful,” this was one of two Top 10 hits to come All the Girls. They were perfect partners, the [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Four Seasons[/lastfm]-esque pop rock of “Bad Time” mixing perfectly with the pseudo-gospel of “Some Kind of Wonderful.” A near-perfect pop song, commensurate with the likes of [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Todd Rundgren[/lastfm]‘s “Hello It’s Me” and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lighthouse[/lastfm]‘s “Pretty Lady.”

#2. “Shinin’ On” (from Shinin’ On):

After scoring their second #1 song with “The Loco-Motion” in 1973, GF released the title cut from Shinin’ On (which went to #11 on the pop chart). It showed that they hadn’t lost their edge: the phased-out guitar at the beginning alone is worth the price of admission, made even better by Mark Farner’s furious solo. One of grooviest songs to come out of Michigan since Seger’s cover of “Love the One You’re With.”
