NOT SO FAST: Adam Lambert ISN’T Replacing Freddie Mercury – YET!

US glam rocker Adam Lambert

Britain’s “Daily Star” tabloid is reporting that [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Queen[/lastfm] is headlining Sonisphere this summer, with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Adam Lambert[/lastfm] as their singer…

In the report, Adam is quoted as saying he realizes he can’t replace [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]FREDDIE MERCURY[/lastfm] . . . and he’s not trying to.  (–Freddie died of AIDS-related complications in 1991.  He was 45 years old.)

Adam said, quote, “The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some great songs.  It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of.”

But as it turns out, this story is PREMATURE . . . if not completely inaccurate.

Adam CLARIFIED the situation on Twitter.  He Tweeted, quote, “Oooh them clever reporters, takin’ my quotes outta context.  I haven’t confirmed any guest appearances.  I was talking about the EMAs.  That being said, I’m truly flattered by your jump to such glorious conclusions, Mr. Journalist!!”

Adam performed with Queen’s [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]BRIAN MAY[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]ROGER TAYLOR[/lastfm] at the “MTV Europe Music Awards” in Belfast last November.  They also performed together in 2009, on the finale of Adam’s “American Idol” season.

However, it sounds like there’s a good chance Adam WILL team up with Queen.

A rep for Queen’s label said, quote, “[This 'Daily Star' report] is not confirmed.  Nothing has been signed.  However, if this were to happen, Queen would be returning to the setting of their final concert with Freddie Mercury.”  (???)

(–Queen’s last show with Freddie went down at England’s Knebworth Park in 1986.  This year’s Sonisphere festival tour will hit Knebworth in July.)

That isn’t much of a denial.

Brian May and Roger Taylor haven’t commented on this . . . but back in December Roger said, quote, “[Adam] has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice with a range that’s great.  We would like to work with him again.

“There’s nothing signed just yet but we’re talking about live dates.  It could be very exciting.”  (–You can find video of Adam performing with Queen at the EMAs at MTV.com.) ~JZ.
