When [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Diana Ross[/lastfm] receives the Grammys’ Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday night, it will be first time the Recording Academy has officially honored her…
Amazingly, after 48 years, 100-million-records sold and 18 number-one hits between [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]The Supremes[/lastfm] and her solo work, she has never won a Grammy!
And a commentary in yesterday’s Los Angeles Times painted her as being unappreciated with the Lifetime Achievement Award merely a belated consolation prize.
While the rift with former band-mates [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mary Wilson[/lastfm] and the late [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Flo Ballard[/lastfm] are well documented, and, like many female performers, who’ve not always been given a fair shake compared to the guys, has she unfairly been painted as a diva? Is she the victim of racial prejudice, as [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Marvin Gaye[/lastfm] once inferred?
Or is she looked down upon because she has embraced the mainstream of pop music, unlike the edgier material tackled by Gaye, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm] or [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Aretha Franklin[/lastfm]?
