June 15th, 1966: Today marks The Beatles’ release of the U.S. only album, “Yesterday and Today.” This album was an amalgam of songs from the British versions of “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver;” plus the double-sided single “We Can Work It Out”/”Day Tripper.” This was also the infamous “Butcher Cover” album.
The Beatles were upset over Capitol Records‘ repackaging of their material, so they posed for the cover shoot in butcher’s smocks, covered with bones and meat. There was such a public outcry that the cover was re-shot, and in order to save money, the new cover was pasted over the old. The albums with the “butcher cover” or the “pasted-over butcher cover,” are worth thousands of dollars today.
