I somehow missed that one-half of rock music’s most successful duo ever was in Ft Worth the other night, performing at Ft Worth’s new Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge! John Oates released a great album last year paying homage to his influences like Elvis and Curtis Mayfield. He & Daryl Hall will perform in Allen this September. Can’t wait for that one.

Oates came out before his band and played a four song acoustic set to a crowd only about one row deep at Live Oak. Of the four songs was one of the few Hall & Oates songs he was lead on, “How Does it Feel to be Back”.

Once the band took the stage with Hall more people funneled into the music hall but not more than you would expect from an independent country act trying to get their name out there.

Robert Philpot of DFW.com summed up the show, “Oates may have been overshadowed by Daryl Hall, but he has a rich voice of his own, and he sang with smooth verve and performed with good humor, although he seemed at the edge of his good-naturedness when he had to shush some concertgoers who were chattering during one of his many anecdotes.”

Oates stuck to his solo work as well as the stuff from his new album honoring his influences. There were some Hall & Oates songs, She’s Gone, Maneaterand You Make My Dreams Come True, as well.

Philpot pointed out that the small crowd gave Oates the ability to banter with the few that showed up. The sparseness also gave, “the sense that this was something special and that people who weren’t there didn’t know what they were missing.”

Daryl Hall will join up with John Oates September 10th at the Allen Event Center.
