Legendary R&B singer Fontella Bass, who is best known for her 1965 hit “Rescue Me”, has passed away.

CBS St. Louis is reporting that Bass died Wednesday after a heart attack. She was 72-years-old.

Bass first stepped into the spotlight in ’65 with the single “Don’t Mess With A Good Thing,” but found the most success with “Rescue Me” which reached number one on the R&B charts and managed to land in the top five for the pop charts.

Her first album, The New Look, hit record store shelves in 1966 and she continued to create new music throughout the seventies.

Bass was inducted into the St. Louis Hall of Fame in 2000. She is survived by her four children.
