Young Women Living With Parents in Record Number; Most Since 1940

Interesting research about when women leave the nest. The percentage of women 18-34 living at home is the highest in 70 years by a slight margin: 36.4% last year, compared to 36.2% in 1940.

Researchers are stumped by these stats, considering the economy has improved. For some reason, even though the job market has improved in the last five years, the percentage of young adults living with their parents has increased.

The percentage rate for men is even higher, at 42.8% of the same age range living at home. However that figure is several percentage points lower than the 1940 figure of 47.5%

The lowest percentage was in the 1960s when 24% of young men and women lived at home.

I know that in other countries it’s not only normal for young adults to continue living with parents, but expected! They think it’s crazy that we move out on our own before marriage.

I sure wouldn’t have minded my mom’s cooking for a few more years… !
