Donna Summer, who passed away today from cancer at the age of 63, was more than one of the disco era’s most successful artists. She earned a string of hits throughout the Seventies and Eighties with her innovative songwriting and powerful, sensual voice that has influenced dance music for decades.

From the rough-and-tumble of “Bad Girls” to the triumphant anthem (and wedding favorite) “Last Dance,” and many moving ballads in between, Summer helped define the magic of the dance floor all over the world.

They pretty much gave up on the song after this session, and did not finish it until November of 1969.  It eventually became the “B” side to their last single in England, “Let It Be.”   What’s odd about this song (other than being odd to begin with) is that it contains no guitars other than Paul’s bass.  John played maracas and George Harrison played the vibraphone.  Brian Jones from the Rolling Stones played alto saxophone.  The song was only ever relased in glorious mono.

The largest analysis ever of the link between coffee consumption and mortality says that coffee drinkers out live non-coffee drinkers.

“I would say it offers some reassurance to coffee drinkers,” Neal Freedman, a nutritional epidemiology researcher at the National Cancer Institute told MSN. “Other studies have suggested a higher risk of mortality with coffee drinking and we didn’t see that in our study.”

The crazy fact is that the more coffee you drink the lower your risk of dying. Men who drank at least six cups of coffee a day had a 10 percent lower chance of dying during the 14 year study than those who drank no coffee. For women it was 15 percent lower.

About 64 percent of adults in the U.S. drink coffee on a daily basis, totally about 479 million cups of coffee consumed every day.

Freedman and his team reviewed the coffee habits of more than 402,000 people followed between 1995 and 2008. More than 52,000 of those people died.

So drink up, the more the better.

The five time Grammy winner was trying to keep most of the details of her illness under wraps while trying to finish up an album she had been working on.

With hits like “Last Dance”, “Hot Stuff,” and “Bad Girls” the big voiced diva was one of the most succesful artist of the 70′s. The end of the Disco era didn’t hurt Summer’s career as she had hits in the 80′s as well with “She Works Hard for the Money” and “This Time I Know It’s for Real.”

Summer married Brooklyn Dreams singer Bruce Sudano back in 1980. They had two daughters together.

Leon Hendrix, the 64-year-old kid brother of guitar legend Jimi Hendrix, has written a new memoir that recounts life with a budding guitar genius.

The book, Jimi Hendrix: A Brother’s Story, recounts a childhood with the electric guitar legend in the making.

Leon, who had been shut out of the Hendrix estate in a dispute with his half-sister, won the rights to his brother’s name and likeness in 2011, and decided to put it to good use.

Rolling Stone sat down with Leon recently to ask him about his memoir.

When asked about how he has stories nobody else has, Leon responded, “Exactly, and I’ve still got more. But I have to be coaxed into remembering them.”

Leon spoke of why he called Jimi Buster. “Yeah, because he was born Johnny Allen Hendrix. Everyone called him Little Johnny – “Hey, Johnny. Come, Johnny.” He bonded with Johnny. Then our father came home [from the military] five years later – he’d never seen the kid – and he picked him up and said, “I’m gonna change your name.” Daddy, why? “Because that’s the name of your mother’s boyfriend,” Leon said.

He continued, “Jimi would never answer to James. When we lived in the projects, there was a field house where every Saturday, if you brought a nickel, you could watch 15 minutes of Buster Crabbe in Flash Gordon. So one day he came home, put a cape on and said, “My name is Buster.” We’ve been calling him Buster all our lives,”

The interview ended with Leon being asked about Jimi’s unique mellow voice, and where it came from. “That’s because he was always told to shut up when he was a kid. My dad always said “children should be seen and not heard.” Jimi was always introverted. My dad didn’t like him playing music, and that hurt his feelings. He went inside with his art and music. But when he got onstage…That was his escape,” Leon responded.

In receiving the honor, King joined other artists including John Fogerty, the Jacksons, the Bee Gees, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Paul Simon, Brian Wilson, Willie Nelson, James Brown, Carlos Santana, and Dolly Parton who have been recipients of the award.

Peter Noone, who first burst onto the music scene in 1964 as lead singer for Herman’s Hermits, performed that band’s King penned first single, “I’m Into Something Good,” in a musical tribute to King. He was joined in the tribute by Colbie Caillat performing “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and up-and-comer Hailey Reinhart, who sang “Beautiful.”

Throughout her more than half century career in music, King has received a total of 31 BMI songwriting awards in varying genres including pop, R&B and country.
